Expanded Prescriptive Authority

Opioid Agonist Therapy (OAT) is a treatment protocol for addiction to opioids such as heroin, oxycodone, hydromorphone, fentanyl and Percocet (oxycodone/acetaminophen). OAT therapy reduces cravings and prevents withdrawals with the use of opioid agonists like methadone (Methadose) and buprenorphine (Suboxone).

OAT therapy has proven to be highly effective in enabling those living with opioid use disorder to seek treatment, and more importantly, to prevent overdose deaths due to a toxic supply of illicit drugs. At present, fewer than 5000 people across the province receive safer supply prescriptions.

Naturopathic physicians in BC can enroll in education programs such as those offered by the BC Centre for Substance Use (BCCSU), including the provincial opioid addiction treatment support program, to prescribe medications used to treat opioid use disorders. Studies have shown the efficacy of prescription alternatives to illicit drugs, making naturopathic physicians an untapped resource in helping to combat this crisis.

BCND also advocates for sufficient and appropriate funding of naturopathic services, and changes to policy allowing naturopathic physicians to bill the medical system for patients seeking OAT.
