SUMMARY:Penny Kendall Reed – In Person Education Event – The Final Wave
DESCRIPTION:Using genetics and natural supplementation to treat post-viral residual conditions ranging from anxiety and addiction to joint pain\, inflammation and neuropathy. \nStudies reveal that 1 in 4 people develop post-viral or “long-haul” syndrome. This doesn’t just effect adults\, with 20-30% of infected children also suffering the same complication. There is no test for this common post-pandemic symptom complex and treatment options are inconsistent and nebulous. This leaves patients confused\, frustrated and in poor health. \nViral infections typically cause acute illness in the majority of infected individuals\, with a certain percentage going on to develop a longer term and more variable symptom complex. While acute conditions comprise the initial waves of a viral pandemic\, the “final waves” comprise a hangover of “long haul” patients suffering from a wide range of diffuse conditions including anxiety and depression\, addiction\, neuropathy\, vertigo\, joint pain and inflammation\, and chronic cough or sinusitis. The burden of this final wave is often underestimated\, lying as it does in the shadow of the initial pandemic tsunami. However\, the impact it has on the lives of those it affects is likely far more profound and lasting than the earlier waves. It is therefore extremely important that we as doctors learn how to treat it. \nThis lecture will focus on understanding what causes post-viral\, long-haul syndrome and in particular the individual genetic factors that predispose to its development.  Specific attention will be given to the symptoms listed above including both the mental and physical conditions associated with post-viral disruption of immunity\, inflammation\, joint integrity and neurotransmitter function. I will then demonstrate how this knowledge can be used to formulate highly individualized\, multimodal treatment strategies and protocols for both prevention and treatment. Illustrative case reports will be presented to solidify an effective management approach.
