Biography

Dr. Spooner bridges conventional and complementary medicine, helping patients work through complex or persistent health concerns and choose care that fits their needs, goals, and stage of life. His approach adds time, thoughtful assessment, and another perspective alongside—not instead of—the care provided by family doctors and specialists. A graduate of the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (1998), Chris completed a three-year postdoctoral fellowship in Environmental Medicine at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine. He stayed on as an Assistant Professor and clinical faculty member and cared for firefighters at the Phoenix Fire Department Medical Centre. After nearly two decades practising in the Okanagan, he joined Dr. Trent Brereton at Kootenay Health Centre in 2026. His practice interests include: Sports medicine, performance nutrition, recovery, and functional blood-chemistry assessment. Gut health and inflammatory bowel disease. Integrative oncology support. Women’s health, menopause, and hormone therapy. Musculoskeletal care, including prolotherapy and PRP, alongside Dr. Brereton’s ultrasound-guided injection practice. Chris holds prescriptive authority in British Columbia and certifications in advanced injection therapy, intravenous therapy, acupuncture, and chelation. He has taught and lectured across Canada, served as adjunct faculty at UBC Okanagan, contributed to clinical publications and research, and served as Vice-Chair of the College of Naturopathic Physicians of BC. His interest in sports medicine is grounded in personal experience: he rowed for the UVic Vikes, represented Canada at the 1991 Pan American Games, and later competed internationally in masters cross-country skiing. His Kootenay roots date to four seasons as a wildland firefighter with Nelson’s Valhalla Unit Crew from 1992 to 1995. Outside the clinic, Chris enjoys cross-country skiing, mountain biking, canoeing, and swimming—part of what drew him and his family to the Kootenays. New patients are welcome. Book through the Kootenay Health Centre online scheduler or by calling the clinic.
